about

Review by Serge P

Widely used in recent years given the paradigm shift in the industry and the democratization of music technology, the DIY philosophy has always inspired the productions of this singer-songwriter based in the south of Madrid. From Brian Wilson and his 'bedroom tapes' to the more contemporary Carla del Forno, they have contributed to promoting the idea that it is not necessary to have great technical skills to create sound magic. In the making of this double-sided single, Karlos Manchild walks, once again, along this path.
The titletrack song,"Old Summer",is an example of the successful combination between the soul of the most heterodox crooners - Scott Walker, Georgie Fame and the most daring Marc Almond - and the clean, sophisticated pop of Aztec Camera or Prefab Sprout. The result is a timeless, magnetic mid-tempo with a certain bluesy aftertaste that seems to evoke long aimless walks of a flanneur trapped in a suffocating reality.
In contrast, "Your magic song" is fully immersed in the synthetic melancholy of those warm and dark sounds so neatly manoeuvred by OMD in the early days of the 80's, still irremediably linked to the Mersey's shore. Among his verses we find the essence that surrounds both tracks: You're free to run too / you're free to go beyond / you're free to write a song. An invitation to dream without fear with a total creative and emotional liberation, so necessary in this dystopic nebula that we are living in.
